Born in Hirosake in 1929, Kunihiro Amano graduated from the Aomori Prefecture Technical school, then taught himself the art of woodblock print making. He first exhibited prints in 1955 with the Nihon Hanga Kyokai, with early prints often using woodgrain elements.

Hashimoto Okiie, a woodblock print artist, initially worked as a teacher and spare-time artist. Later, he devoted himself completely to the artistic activity and became well known only after the publication of Oliver Statler’s Modern Japanese Prints (1960).
